Project Description
School boats need to be durable, yet quick enough to give the new sailor the experience of sailing a ‘real’ catamaran. They need to have a range of sail plan options including the ability to reef the main enabling the boat to be sailed in light airs and bigger breezes alike. They also need to have sturdy sails to endure the rigours of the school envrironment. The NACRA 500 School does all these and more!
Real thought has gone into this boat in the 500 range. The design includes a boomless mainsail so the crew don’t have to worry too much about ducking as the sails go over in a gybe or tack, while the hulls are buoyant making the boat a relatively dry experience and reducing the likely hood of pitch poling. The cat is big enough to be sailed by three children or two adults, allowing for greater flexibility.
While safety is in mind, the NACRA 500 School can be sailed by intermediate sailors too. Her twin trapeze allows for both crew and helms to experience dual upwind trapezing. The layout is about a clear deck yet reasonable comfort at the same time. Finally, for beaching and launching the cat has the NACRA kick-up rudder system and hull skegs.
